SIX SCULPTURES FORMING A GLOW-IN-THE-DARK WALKING TRAIL IN YEPPOON
‘Narnia’ Inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
A recycled wardrobe is transformed into the winter world of Narnia, but this time, it’s glowing! Take a peek inside, but you better watch your back as the lion and the witch have already climbed out…
‘Dream Jars’ Inspired by The BFG
A collection of recycled glass jars and bottles containing illuminated particles represent dreams caught by the Big Friendly Giant. The BFG catches both good dreams and nightmares in Dream Country which he stores in a special tree. Each dream is labelled by words on the outside of the jar. In the middle of the night, the BFG blows the dreams through a long trumpet into the bedrooms of sleeping children. What kinds of dreams can you see? And what do you dream about?
‘Tree of Souls’ Inspired by Avatar
Recycled cotton and lace represent the branches of the willow tree known as the Tree of Souls or Vitraya Ramunong in Na’vi. The tree is said to be the closest connection to Eywa, the deity of the planet of Pandora, and is, therefore, a point of extreme spiritual significance. Eywa acts to keep the ecosystem of Pandora in perfect equilibrium, and the tree allows the Na’vi to connect to Eywa and the neural network through its branches.
Recycled fishing lines and jewellery are transformed into seeds known as woodsprites or atokirina. According to the Na’vi, these seeds are very pure and sacred spirits, seen as the bearers of omens and signs.
‘Puppet Master’ Inspired by The Godfather
Recycled wood and welding rods recreate the infamous marionette imagery of The Godfather movie poster.
‘I work my whole life - I don’t apologize - to take care of my family, and I refused to be a fool, dancing on the string held by all those big shots. I don’t apologize - that’s my life - but I thought that… that when it was your time… that you would be the one to hold the strings.’ - Don Vito Corleone
Which one are you? The puppet, or the one holding the strings?
‘The Mushroom Forest’ Inspired by Alice in Wonderland
Recycled items such as CDs, records, bottle caps, a bin lid, a birdcage, and a fruit bowl are transformed into psychedelic, oversized mushrooms, giving the illusion that the viewer is shrinking. When eaten, some of the mushrooms would make you as tall as a house, while others would make you as small as a mouse. Which one is your favourite?
‘Neo’ Inspired by The Matrix
Recycled fishing line and fishing net weights are attached to a crab pot to recreate the bullets shot at Neo by The Agents. Neo’s hand, which freezes the bullets in mid-air, is formed by driftwood, simultaneously bringing forth a call for sustainable and responsible fishing practices across the world.
Many thanks to the Capricorn Film Festival, Livingstone Shire Council RADF, and Keppel Coast Arts for this opportunity.
