Caribbean Storm

This painting was born from a season of profound transformation.

Created in reflection of experiences that shattered my sense of identity in my late twenties, Caribbean Storm explores the process of rebuilding a life after everything you thought you knew about yourself has been called into question.

The gathering storm represents the collapse of an old way of being. The stripping away of beliefs, expectations, ambitions, and identities that no longer fit.

Yet this painting is not really about the storm itself - it is about the stillness at its centre.

The strange calm that can emerge when surrender finally replaces resistance.

I remember feeling as though I was standing in the eye of the storm, watching enormous forces of change swirl around me while I simply observed. The old self had fallen away, and although the future remained uncertain, there was a growing sense that life was reorganising itself to reveal something more true.

The palms became powerful symbols throughout this process. They bend with the wind rather than fighting against it. They survive not because they are rigid and bound, but because they are willing to peel back their layers, drop the dead leaves, and move. For me, they came to represent resilience, adaptability, and the wisdom of surrendering to forces greater than ourselves.

After the turbulence, there is renewal. Rising from the ashes of a former self and discovering that what feels like an ending can become the beginning of a deeper, more authentic life.

A reminder that storms do not always arrive to break us.

Sometimes they arrive to reveal who we really are.
